Database for Microbial Identification
It has been predicted by the World Health Organization that one third of the world is infected with the bacteria Mycobacterium tuberculosis, which causes the disease tuberculosis. Even more alarming is the rate at which the bacteria are forming a resistance to first-line drug, Pyrazinamide (PZA). Researchers at the University of Nebraska Medical Center have developed a technique based on Temperature Mediated Heteroduplex analysis using denaturing HPLC to detect drug resistance as well as the ability to differentiate between closely related Mycobacterium species. This technique well help provide information on resistance and type of bacteria in order for each patient to be treated more efficiently and effectively.
