Detection of Pathogenic Fungal Species
Summary:
Aspergillus species are the most frequent cause of invasive mold infections in immunocompromised patients. While the vast majority of Aspergillus related disease stem from only a few of the Aspergillus species, the ability to distinguish between the species is critical as they vary in virulence, resistance, and mortality rates. Researchers at the University of Nebraska Medical Center have developed a new set of materials and methods that rapidly and specifically identify different pathogenic and non-pathogenic Aspergillus species in a biological sample.
