Summary:

There are three general types of splints for individuals with non-rigid contractures: 1) an over the counter (OTC), pre-sized splint, 2) a custom splint made of low temperature plastic or 3) a custom splint made by negative casting of the extremity. These options are often not aesthetically pleasing, can be uncomfortable for the patient, do not maintain their form over time, and the product can be difficult to manipulate for a proper or beneficial fit. A researcher at the University of Nebraska Medical Center has created a better fitting two piece wrist-hand-finger orthosis and a simple and effective method by which to cast the splint.
