Antimicrobial Peptides
Summary:
The cathelicidin, antimicrobial peptide found in mammals, LL-37 is the only known human cathelicidin to confer protection from bacterial infection. Despite the high bacterial toxicity, the clinical application was very limited due to high number of serious side effects. Researchers at the University of Nebraska Medical Center successfully have modified LL-37 to produce novel compound with highly selective antimicrobial activity and reduced side toxicity.
