Michael Dixon is President and CEO, working with faculty, students and staff to help commercialize innovative, new ideas that have the potential to improve public health in Nebraska and beyond. Dr. Dixon is responsible for setting UNeMed’s strategic path while directing efforts to protect, market and license new technologies.
 
Dr. Dixon is a graduate of Leadership Omaha Class 32 and a 2011 recipient of the Midlands Business Journal “40 under 40” award. As an active member of the community, Dr. Dixon serves on several Boards of Directors. He is the CEO of Invest Nebraska Corporation, a non-profit, venture development organization that advises and invests in companies and early stage business ideas in Nebraska. He also sits on the board of Bio Nebraska, a nonprofit trade association dedicated to the development and growth of Nebraska’s bioscience industry.
 
Dr. Dixon holds a doctorate in Pathology and Microbiology from UNMC.

Dr. Catherine Murari-Kanti is a licensing specialist at UNeMed and is responsible for evaluating UNMC’s and UNO’s inventions and discoveries and checking for commercial and patent viability. As part of her role, she engages with faculty, staff and students to discuss their inventions, performs prior-art searches to check for patentability and seeks licensing rights to the University’s technologies through marketing activities with industrial partners. Dr. Murari-Kanti also directs UNeMed’s educational outreach programs, including the annual Technology Transfer Boot Camp and the Enhanced Medical Education Track – Innovations in Clinical Care for the School of Medicine.
 
Dr. Murari-Kanti completed her bachelor’s and master’s in Pharmaceutical Sciences and joined the Cancer Research Graduate Program at UNMC in 2010. During her tenure as a graduate student she felt pulled towards non-traditional careers after a Ph.D. This led her to enroll in UNeMed’s Research Commercialization Course in 2013 and the Technology Transfer Boot Camp in 2015, eventually leading to a UNeMed internship after graduation.

Joe Runge is the business development manager at UNeMed. He works with inventors, entrepreneurs and developers to advance early stage technology towards the market. Despite working for the University, Joe fancies himself an entrepreneur and spends much of his day assessing business models, evaluating data and otherwise seeing business opportunities in early stage inventions.

The only person ever to earn both a law degree and a master’s degree in molecular biology from the University of Iowa, Joe briefly worked in the office of general counsel at Integrated DNA Technologies before joining UNMC in 2005. Joe has become a sought after expert on technology transfer and a published author on intellectual property and entrepreneurship. He holds academic positions at both UNMC and UNO and enjoys baffling students with technology, law, entrepreneurship and other black magic.

Steven J. Schreiner is Vice President and Director of Marketing and Licensing at UNeMed, overseeing the evaluation, marketing, and licensing of University innovations. Trained as a cancer biologist at the University of Nebraska Medical Center, Dr. Schreiner works to ensure disclosed innovations are timely evaluated for both scientific and commercial potential, and oversees the marketing efforts of promising technologies and related agreement execution and compliance. Additional responsibilities include office data management, office personnel and resources, campus technology development education, and public outreach. Born and raised in Elmwood, Neb., he holds a doctorate in Pathology and Microbiology, and is a registered patent agent.

Prior to joining UNeMed as its contracts specialist, Jeff Andersen built up more than 10 years of experience as a practicing patent attorney. He draws on that experience in conducting his current responsibilities, which include drafting, negotiating, reviewing and processing various agreements—which facilitate and promote both the research efforts of the University’s researchers and the protection and monetization of the University’s intellectual property. A native of Omaha, Jeff holds a Juris Doctor from Creighton University School of Law.

Jason Nickla is Vice President and Director of Intellectual Property at UNeMed Corporation. As a registered patent attorney, Mr. Nickla is responsible for protecting new inventions and drafting contracts for transferring intellectual property rights to industry partners for commercialization of those technologies. He graduated from Creighton University with a B.S. in biology, and from Creighton University School of Law with a J.D. He also secured an L.L.M. in International Intellectual Property Law from Chicago-Kent College of Law. Mr. Nickla began his legal career in Chicago law firms, specializing in patent prosecution and providing PCT application patentability opinions to the USPTO.

Mindy Ware is the paralegal for UNeMed Corporation, the technology transfer and commercialization office for the University of Nebraska Medical Center (UNMC) and the University of Nebraska at Omaha (UNO) since 2010. Mindy works as a liaison with the University's patent attorneys and inventors, coordinating the patent protection strategy for the University. She works with licensees and co-owners to ensure the University's intellectual property rights are maintained appropriately. Mindy has been working as a paralegal for over 22 years. She earned her Certified Paralegal designation in 2009 and her Advanced Certified Paralegal designation in Alternative Dispute Resolution in 2010. She received a bachelor's degree in Business Administration from Nebraska Wesleyan University in 2007. She also has paralegal experience in the areas of litigation, family law, probate and insurance law.

Val Gunderson is the office manager at UNeMed. She manages many behind the scenes and day-to-day operations for the department and its staff including administrative processes, HR hiring & policies, employee compliance requirements, campus safety and recognition programs, as well as meeting and event planning and anything else that comes up. Val has been on campus for over 30 years, and has had the distinct privilege of working with some of UNMC’s brightest leaders on many groundbreaking programs and initiatives. Val is the recipient of two Silver U Awards and the Chancellor’s Gold U Award.

Charlie Litton is the marketing and web content specialist at UNeMed, working with licensing staff to help promote and publicize University innovations. A former journalist, Litton leads the planning and execution of UNeMed's major events, while developing most of UNeMed's promotional and informational materials, including web content, annual reports, press releases, infographics, photos and videos. A native of Omaha, he holds a master's degree in journalism from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln.
